How information is used

Navigational information is only used for BestGem's purposes to better serve the customer and to ensure maximum site usability. Transactional information such as account or credit card numbers and demographic information such as zip code are used only to send orders. Contact information such as name, e-mail address and phone number may be used to send special promotions to the customer and contact them regarding a sale transaction or post purchase enquire. Why and how BestGem Gathers Information

BestGem continuously gathers online customer activity and information in order to make the necessary enhancements for improving the online shopping experience of our users. Periodically BestGem will run promotions and contests, update our website, company policy, and/or contact info. We will make all attempts to keep our users abreast of these changes.

Information Sharing

Though we make every effort to preserve user privacy, we may need to disclose personal information when required by law wherein we have a good-faith belief that such action is necessary to comply with a current judicial proceeding, a court order or legal process served on our Web site. Under no other circumstance we will share our customers' information.

In order to complete a credit card transaction, we share the customers partial information with an authorized credit card processing company to verify that the credit card has enough funds to complete the transaction and/or the credit card is valid. In addition, contact information is furnished to an authorized shipping carrier to ship purchased products to the customer. This information is not used by any other means other than the ones aforementioned.

Correcting/Updating/Deleting/Deactivating Personal Information

If a user’s personally identifiable information changes (such as zip code, phone, e-mail or postal address), we provide a way to correct, update or delete/deactivate users’ personally identifiable information. Cookies, Clear Gifs (Web Beacons/Web Bugs), etc.

A cookie is a piece of data stored on the user’s computer tied to information about the user. Usage of a cookie is in no way linked to any personally identifiable information while on our site and is only used to enhance the navigation experience and for transactional purposes. Once the customer places his/her order, the cookie is permanently deleted from his/her computer. In order to make a purchase from our store, a customer must have cookies activated in his/her browser (activated by default). All browsers come with instructions on how to activate/deactivate cookies.

Clear gifs are tiny graphics with a unique identifier, similar in function to cookies, and are used to track the online movements of Web users. We DO NOT use clear gifs (web beacons/web bugs)

Log Files

Like most standard Web site servers we use log files. This may include Internet protocol (IP) addresses, browser type, Internet service provider (ISP), referring/exit pages, platform type, date/time stamp, and number of clicks to analyze trends, administer the site, track user’s movement in the aggregate, and gather broad demographic information for aggregate use. IP addresses, etc. are not linked to personally identifiable information. We use a tracking utility called Urchin that uses log files to analyze user movement.

Communications from the Site

Special Offers and Confirmation e-mails:
We send all new members a confirmation e-mail as soon as he/she places his/her order. Existing customers may occasionally receive information on products, services and special deals. Out of respect for the privacy of our users we present the option to not receive these types of communications by sending us an e-mail to remove@bestgem.com or calling us at 305-579-2378 or 579-808-2378.

We communicate with users on a regular basis to provide requested services and in regards to issues relating to their account we reply via e-mail or phone, in accordance with the users wishes.

Security

BestGem.com guarantees that any sentitive information provided by the customer is protected both online and offline.

All sensitive information transmitted through our web site (such as credit card number or address) is transmitted using secure socket layers (SSL) encryption at 128 bits (the current industry standard). When this technology is used the lock icon on the bottom of Web browsers such as Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer becomes locked, as opposed to un-locked, or open, when users are just ‘browsing’ or ‘surfing’.

Offline protection of user information is also extremely important to us. Only employees who need the information to perform a specific job (billing and sales personnel) are granted access to personally identifiable information. Furthermore, ALL employees are kept up-to-date on our security and privacy practices and are reminded that any infringement, if proven, will result in immediate termination of employment. Finally, the servers and file cabinets that store personally identifiable information are in a secure environment.
